Diabetic Eyes Require Special Care & Attention

Diabetes affects the body in many ways and can have an impact on your vision and eye health. As such, patients with diabetes should ensure they undergo a comprehensive, diabetic eye exam at least once per year. However, your optometrist may suggest that you visit more frequently.

Diabetes & Your Eyes

Did you know that a comprehensive eye exam can be used to detect early-stage diabetes? That is just one of the many reasons you should have your eyes examined regularly.

Diabetes can increase your chances of developing serious conditions that could threaten your vision and eye health.

Diabetes increases your chances of developing:

Nearly one in three people over the age of 40 with diabetes already exhibits some signs of diabetic retinopathy. This serious condition occurs when the delicate blood vessels in our eyes become damaged leaking blood and fluid into the retina, and without treatment, it can lead to permanent vision loss or even blindness.

People with diabetes are almost twice as likely to develop cataracts than those without diabetes, and are also more likely to develop them at a younger age.

Diabetes nearly doubles your chances of developing glaucoma. Glaucoma is particularly serious because it’s most common form (open-angle glaucoma) rarely exhibits symptoms until permanent peripheral vision loss has already occurred.

Diabetic Eye Exams

Since diabetes can affect your eyes in many ways, it is critical that diabetic eyes receive specialized care and attention. That’s why Associates in Eyecare – Oakton offers eye exams specifically tailored to the needs of patients with diabetes, including retinal imaging.

Patients with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes should undergo a comprehensive eye exam at least once per year. This is true even if your blood sugar is well controlled and you are not currently experiencing any problems with your vision or overall health.
