What Causes Dry Eyes?

Dry eyes have two main causes: poor tear quality and inadequate tear volume. Our eyes depend on our tears for lubrication, so if we produce tears of poor quality or aren’t able to produce enough tears, it can lead to dry eyes.

Tears have three main components: oil (called meibum), water, and mucin. Meibum creates a protective coating on the surface of the tear film, slowing the evaporative process, while mucin helps ensure your tears spread evenly over the surface of your eye. When your tears evaporate too quickly or aren’t distributed evenly across your eye’s surface, you experience dry eye symptoms.

Our tears are produced by several different glands both in and around our eyelids. Tear production can be hindered by a variety of factors, including aging, certain medications, and some medical conditions.

Environmental factors, such as strong winds or a dry environment, can also cause our tears to evaporate too quickly.

Dry Eye Symptoms

Dry eye symptoms include, but are not limited to:

  • Burning or gritty eyes
  • Blurry vision

Before we can begin to treat your dry eyes, we need to identify the root cause of your specific case of dry eyes. We do this by performing a complete dry eye assessment. Like all tests we perform, our complete dry eye assessments use advanced techniques and are MOA approved.

Once we have determined the cause of your dry eyes, we can create a tailored treatment plan to manage your unique situation. This may include:

  • Nutritional Supplements: Research has found that eye health relies, at least in part, on a healthy diet. Some nutrients, such as omega-3 fatty acids, can reduce eye inflammation and increase meibum production, providing relief from dry eye symptoms. Omega-3 fatty acids can be found in nuts, leafy greens, and fish. The AREDS2 study, a comprehensive nutritional study focused on eye health, found that our eyes benefit from the consumption of vitamin C, vitamin E, lutein, zeaxanthin, and zinc.
  • Thermal Treatment: Thermal energy is an in-office treatment to relieve clogged meibomian glands. This device uses soothing heat to warm the meibomian glands, allowing meibum to flow more easily, increasing balanced tear production, and providing long-lasting relief from dry eye symptoms.

TearCare® is an open-eye in office procedure designed to target the underlying cause of evaporative dry eye. By applying heat directly to the eyelid TearCare melts the blockage within your meibomian glands.
