Common Eye Emergencies & First Aid Strategies

Some eye emergencies occur more often than others. If you or someone you know is currently experiencing an eye emergency, please employ the suggested first aid strategies below, then either contact our office or proceed to your nearest emergency room.

When you get harmful chemicals in or around your eyes, it can put your vision at risk. To prevent damage, flush your eyes for at least 15 minutes using cool, clean water.

You must flush your eyes for the full 15 minutes, even if your eyes begin to feel better before the full time has elapsed. This ensures that any remaining chemicals can be diluted and washed away. After you have finished flushing your eyes, you should seek immediate medical attention.

Your cornea is the thin, transparent film that covers your iris and pupil. This tissue is incredibly delicate, so even a small scratch or light bump could cause significant damage.

Corneal abrasions are incredibly painful and leave your eye vulnerable to infection. If you experience a corneal abrasion, you must avoid rubbing your eye, as this can further irritate the cornea. It is critical that you have your eye professionally examined as soon as possible.

If you suspect that there is debris in your eye or there is something trapped between your eyelid and your eye. you may be able to dislodge it by flushing your eye with cool, clean water. Whether you can remove the object on your own or not, you should seek immediate medical attention.

However, if something is embedded in your eye, don’t rub your eye or attempt to remove the object on your own. Instead, leave the object alone and seek immediate medical attention.
