Experience Freedom From Glasses & Contact Lenses

If you have found that glasses and contact lenses are less than ideal for your lifestyle, you may want to consider refractive surgery. Laser eye surgery, including LASIK and PRK, can provide you with clear vision, without the need for eyewear.

Like any elective surgery, choosing to undergo laser vision correction is a big decision. To help you make the best choice for your needs, Associates in Eyecare – Oakton offers laser eye surgery consultations.

Types of Laser Eye Surgery

LASIK is the most commonly performed type of laser eye surgery. During the procedure, your surgeon will create a small flap in the outer layers of your cornea, which they will then gently move out of the way to reveal your cornea’s inner layers. Next, they will use a laser to reshape these layers, correcting your refraction, before replacing the outer flap.

Just like LASIK, PRK involves using a laser to reshape your cornea’s inner layers. The main difference between the two procedures is that PRK involves gently removing the outer layer of your cornea (the epithelium) instead of making a flap. Once the surgery is complete, your epithelial cells will regrow, and your eyes will repair themselves over the course of a few days.

Since the epithelium requires time to heal, PRK has a longer recovery period than LASIK. However, PRK can be a better choice for some patients, particularly those with thin corneas. Also, because no flap is created, PRK carries no risk of flap-related complications.

During Your Consultation

During the consultation, your optometrist will perform a series of tests to determine if laser eye surgery is a good option for you. The tests consider several factors, including your corneal thickness, pupil size, and current prescription.

If your eyes are well suited to refractive surgery, we will go over the benefits with you and discuss any potential risks or complications. We will also walk you through the procedure, address any questions or concerns you may have, and let you know what sort of results you can expect.

If you decide to undergo laser eye surgery, we will schedule a series of follow up appointments with you, handle your pre and post-operative care, and work with your surgeon to ensure the entire process goes as smoothly as possible.

After Your Surgery

Once your surgery is complete, we will meet with you for your follow up appointments. These appointments are vital because they allow our team to monitor your recovery closely and address any additional questions or concerns that may arise during the recovery process.
