What is Myopia?

Myopia is an increasingly common refractive error that impacts your distance vision. It occurs when your eye is too long, or the front surface of your eye, the cornea is too steep, causing light to focus in front of your retina instead of on it. This, in turn, causes blurry vision, unless you wear prescription glasses or contact lenses.

How is Myopia Controlled?

Because myopic eyes change continually throughout childhood, this refractive error generally gets worse over time. However, this condition can be controlled using a variety of methods such as prescription eye drops, specialized contact lenses, and multifocal glasses, all of which are available at Associates in Eyecare – Oakton.

Atropine eye drops can be used to control myopia. The drops temporarily paralyze the focusing muscles in the eyes, causing the pupils to dilate. This ensures the accommodative muscles have a chance to rest, which some studies have found can help control myopia in children, particularly during the first year of treatment.

Ortho-K contact lenses (also known as orthokeratology contact lenses) are a type of specialized contact lens that can be used to control myopia. These rigid, gas-permeable lenses gently reshape your cornea while you sleep, providing you with clear, uncorrected vision the next day. However, the effect is only temporary, so you must wear your ortho-k lenses every night to continue to enjoy clear vision each day. Prolonged use can also slow the progression of myopia.

These cutting-edge contact lenses are designed for patients who have both myopia and presbyopia. They can provide relief from the strain of focusing on near objects, providing you with clear vision at all distances. These and other multifocal contacts can help slow the progression of myopia in children.

Just like multifocal contact lenses, multifocal glasses are designed to give clear vision to patients who have both myopia and presbyopia. The upper portion of the lens allows you to clearly see objects far away, while the lower portion provides you with clear close vision. Multifocal glasses can also reduce near strain, and can control myopia in children.

Executive top bifocals are a type of glasses lenses that have been shown to reduce myopia progression in children. Like traditional bifocal lenses, the lens contains 2 prescriptions. The top portion corrects distance vision while the bottom portion is used for near vision. The dual prescriptions help reduce eye strain during near vision tasks, which helps to reduce myopia progression.

If either you or your child has myopic eyes, myopia control may be a good option to consider. Speak to your optometrist during your next visit for more information.
